Clean Harbors Appoints Lauren C. States to Board of Directors

Former IBM Executive and Recognized Leader Strengthens Board

NORWELL, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Mar. 11, 2016-- Clean Harbors, Inc. (“Clean Harbors”) (NYSE: CLH), the leading provider of environmental, energy and industrial services throughout North America, today announced the appointment of Lauren C. States to the Company’s Board of Directors.

Ms. States, 59, is an Executive-in-Residence at Northeastern University’s D’Amore-McKim School of Business. During a 36-year career at IBM, Ms. States held a variety of executive positions, the most recent being Vice President of Strategy and Transformation for IBM’s Software Group.

“Lauren is a talented executive who has been highly recognized as a proven leader throughout her distinguished career,” said Alan S. She will provide an important perspective on a range of areas that are central to our success, particularly in sales. She oversaw IBM’s global sales force strategy and go-to-market strategy for its multi-billion dollar software business. Ms. States will be a Class III director and she will stand for election at Clean Harbors’ 2016 Annual Meeting of Shareholders, scheduled for June 8.

Ms. States is a member of the Executive Leadership Council. She is on the Board of Trustees for International House, New York, and is the Advisory Board Co-Chair for the Women in Technology Foundation B~STEM Project. Ms. States holds a B.S. in Economics from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and completed a Fellowship with Harvard University's Advanced Leadership Initiative in 2015.

Ms. States was inducted into the Women in Technology International Hall of Fame in 2014. She received the Federal 100 Award in 2012 and was recognized at the Black Engineer of the Year Conference (BEYA) with the Pioneer Award in 2013. In 2015, Ms. States was featured on the ExxonMobil Be an Engineer campaign website.

The Company also announced that, at its upcoming 2016 Annual Meeting of Shareholders, Lead Director Daniel J. McCarthy, who joined the Company’s Board in 1987, has decided to retire. John P. DeVillars, a director since 2001, also does not intend to stand for re-election in June.
