Clean Harbors’ Reidsville, North Carolina Facility
Earns Rising Star (VPP) Certification

Braintree, MA – May 15, 2006 – Clean Harbors Environmental Services, Inc., the leading provider of environmental and hazardous waste management services throughout North America, today announced that its Reidsville, North Carolina facility has received certification as a Rising Star facility from the North Carolina Department of Labor. The Rising Star Program is part of North Carolina’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Carolina Star Program, which is similar to the Federal Government’s OSHA Voluntary Protection Program (VPP).

Clean Harbors’ Reidsville location is a commercial hazardous waste management facility primarily engaged in receiving hazardous waste generated off-site for on-site consolidation or temporary storage while in transit to a final treatment, recycling, or disposal site. Clean Harbors Reidsville is the first Treatment, Storage, and Disposal Facility (TSDF) in North Carolina to receive this prestigious recognition from OSHA, and is only the second TSDF in the nation to receive this status. Clean Harbors’ Lone Mountain facility in Oklahoma was the first TSDF in the country so designated.

“It is an honor, and privilege to work with a team of employees that is committed to health and safety excellence, which is so important in our industry,” said Keith Anderson, General Manager for Clean Harbors Reidsville. “Each co-worker has played an integral role in this two-year endeavor: attending safety meetings, providing feedback to management, improving their individual safety performance, and looking out for their co-workers. Our employee Safety Committee provided excellent advice on safety and health issues, assisting management in incident investigations, and making recommendations for safety program improvements. Our facility also received unparalleled support from our corporate staff, emphasizing Clean Harbors’ culture of protecting its employees’ health and safety.”

The Rising Star Program is a comprehensive health and safety process that requires employee involvement, management support, and cooperation with North Carolina’s Occupational Safety and Health division. Typically, Star facilities demonstrate a strong safety culture from both management and employees who ensure a safe and healthful workplace environment. Additionally, facilities that are awarded the prestigious certification have occupational injury and illness incidence rates below the state and national averages for companies within the same standard industry classification. “Congratulations to each and every employee at the Clean Harbors Reidsville facility for their participation, dedication, and achievement in being recognized as an OSHA Rising Star! It was truly a collaborative effort,” Anderson concluded.
